Vacancy on SCE Endocrinology & Diabetes Exam Board

This is unique opportunity for someone to join the Specialist Clinic Exam board. Ideally the person will be a generalist, practicing day to day diabetes and endocrinology. However, recognised expertise in any particular field of our speciality will be an advantage. The SCE in diabetes and endocrinology is one of the largest speciality exam held, with several hundred candidates from all over the world sitting each diet, and you would be a part of ensuring the continuing high standard of the exam.

Abbott Diabetes Care to donate FreeStyle Libre 1 sensors to NHS Trusts

With over 30,000 people admitted to hospital with Covid-19, and up to a third of them with diabetes, we know you are working flat out. With the use of steroids in many patients, the need for glucose monitoring to support care in hospital and support safe discharge is even greater than it was in the first wave. We are really pleased to announce that in response to another request from ABCD-DTN, Abbott’s Diabetes Care division have very kindly agreed to donate 10,000 further FreeStyle Libre 1 sensors to NHS Trusts to support us in this.

There are two main purposes of this donation

DTN-UK Guideline: The commencement of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) remotely

This document aims to provide healthcare professionals who work in diabetes, with guidance for commencing both glucose sensors (continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)) and insulin pumps (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII)) in a remote setting.

Covid wave 2

This new year, we find ourselves in perilous times managing a recurrent viral surge (resulting from a mutated strain) which seems to be steeper than the last. Vulnerable elderly people and front-line staff are actively being vaccinated, but we seem to be some way behind the viral wave and always trying to catch up. Like many, I read the sobering and extremely sad news of the death of Professor Donal O’Donoghue, Registrar at the Royal College of Physicians, London. There is much fear upon hearing how colleagues, friends and family have been affected by this terrible disease.

Calling all ABCD members who hold a National Clinical Excellence Award (CEA) award…..

Your help is needed urgently!

CEA’s were paused during 2020 due to the pandemic but now the process for citation and ranking of applications has been reinstated for specialist societies and the Royal College of Physicians.

We are inviting ABCD members who hold a national award to be involved in this process.
