ABCD and Sanofi DKA Collaborative Working Project

Diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication that requires standardised, high-quality care. Despite updates to the Joint British Diabetes Societies-Inpatient (JBDS-IP) guidelines in 2010, 2013, 2021, and 2023, research has shown significant variation in DKA care between patients. Traditional audits have fallen short in addressing this variation, which demands immediate attention.

The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) and Sanofi have initiated a collaborative project to address this issue. Building upon the success of previous quality improvement projects, this initiative aims to standardise DKA management processes by improving adherence to JBDS-IP guidelines and potentially reducing the total duration of DKA episodes sustainably.

Data Management

  •  All data will be collated and analysed by a data analyst sourced by ABCD and University of Birmingham
  • Sanofi will not collect, analyse, or have access to any patient-identifiable data

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved high-quality care for DKA, reducing DKA duration
  • Consistent delivery of high-quality care, potential reduction in hospitalisation costs, better patient outcomes, increased staff knowledge, and sharing of best practices

How You Can Participate

  1. Contact Us: Express your interest in joining the program by contacting the provided contacts from ABCD.
  2. Gain Approvals: Obtain necessary approvals from your local clinical governance or ethics committee. The project team will provide support for this process.
  3. Data Collection: Designate qualified healthcare professionals (medical students, junior doctors, or specialist nurses) to collect data on DKA cases and enter pseudonymised data into the secure form.
  4. Feedback and Improvement: Benefit from regular feedback on your hospital's performance, gain insights into improvement areas, and learn from successful interventions other participating hospitals implement.

The ABCD DKA Collaborative Working Project offers an opportunity to improve DKA care across the UK. By participating, you'll contribute to a national effort to standardise treatment, reduce variations in care, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients with DKA.

Join us in this collaborative effort to improve DKA care and make a lasting impact on patient outcomes across the UK. Learn from successful interventions implemented by other participating hospitals.

Audit Objectives

AIM: To improve adherence to JBDS-IP guidelines for DKA management using quality improvement methodology.
