Diabetes Technology Network Update and East of England Workshop

At the national DTN day, Dr Pratik Choudhary from King’s college London took over as the chair of DTN from Dr Emma Wilmott. , with Dr Alistair Lumb from Oxford taking over as Vice chair. 

DTN is very happy with the uptake and visibility of the DTN Libre Education webinars. These have have very high view numbers and we are really pleased with the national and International feedback we have received. 

ABCD at 10 Downing Street

Dr Dinesh Nagi, ABCD chair, Dr Pratik Choudhary and Dr Emma Wilmot, ABCD DTN-UK chair and ex-chair and ABCD trustee Ketan Dhataryia were invited to Downing Street by Prime Minister, Theresa May. They attended a Reception at Number 10 which thanked staff involved in the care, treatment and prevention of diabetes. The reception included Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Simon Steven, Chief Executive of the NHS and Prime Minister, Theresa May.

ABCD audit of FreeStyle Libre device for flash glucose monitoring shows improved diabetes control in Type 1 diabetes and fewer hospital admissions

A national UK audit of the first technology device allowed to be prescribed for people with Type 1 Diabetes, presented at the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco, shows important benefits both in lowering glucose levels in those with high levels before use of the device and a reduction of hypoglycaemic attacks (‘hypos’ caused by low blood glucose levels). There is also a reduction in the rate of diabetes related-hospital admissions and a reduction of diabetes-related psychological distress during the initial six months of FreeStyle Libre use.

ABCD Travel Grant Scheme Application

As of 1st August 2023 this scheme has been suspended whilst it is under review. No applications will be accepted at the current time.

ABCD will consider claims from members who are Specialist Registrars to assist with travel expenses when presenting their work at an international meeting.

In the first instance you would need to submit a proposal via the Travel Grant Scheme Application Form detailing the reasons you would like to claim, the destination meeting and the sum to be claimed.

DUK call on NHS to do more for the mental health of people with diabetes

On 14 May, Diabetes UK launched a report on mental health and diabetes which shows that 7 out of 10 people have felt overwhelmed by the demands of living with diabetes and three quarters of people with diabetes can't get the emotional and mental health support they need. Diabetes UK are calling on the NHS to ensure that everyone with diabetes is asked about their psychological wellbeing as part of every diabetes appointment.
