Dr Chris Garrett is a consultant in diabetes psychiatry at Bart’s Health and is a national expert in the causes and management of recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis.

Chris qualified from Bart’s and The Royal London Medical School in 2002 and initially trained in medicine before moving to psychiatry in 2006. During psychiatry training he completed a masters in psychotherapy and at the end of higher training he became a research fellow, working with Professor Khalida Ismail at the diabetes and mental health research group at King’s College London. His research at King’s included a PhD in recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis and the development of a mental health intervention for people who struggle most at self-management of type 1 diabetes.

Chris became a consultant in diabetes psychiatry at Bart’s Health and East London Foundation Trust in 2019. His clinical role involves management of people with high risk for early complications and early mortality. He is currently the only full-time psychiatrist specialised in diabetes in UK.

Chris’ research interests are the impact of long-term conditions on personality function and psychotherapeutic approaches in reducing risk and harm to people disengaged from physical health services.
