Dr Downie is a Consultant Lipidologist/Chemical Pathologist at the University Hospitals of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Specialist CVD advisor to the West of England Health Innovation Network. Particular areas of interest include optimisation of lipids in secondary prevention, lipoprotein(a) and hypertriglyceridaemia. He has established the only NGS assay (now included in the National Genomics Test Directory) for the investigation of genetic causes of severe hypertriglyceridemia.
Formerly a GP partner he understands the challenges faced by colleagues in general practice and is passionate about the need to bring a pragmatic approach to patient care. He also a passion for education and working with primary care colleagues to help optimise community-based CVD management.
