Professor Shareen Forbes

Shareen Forbes is Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Lead Physician of the Islet Transplant Programme in Scotland and Visiting Professor of the Islet Transplant Programme, Edmonton, Canada. She graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh and did specialist registrar training in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine in London and was awarded her PhD Fellowship funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation from Imperial College London. She was subsequently awarded a Diabetes UK Clinical Intermediate Fellowship examining metabolism in people with glucose intolerance.

The major focus in her research laboratory is of islet transplantation in rodent models including the underlying mechanisms limiting the success of the procedure. Working closely with researchers in the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, she has made important contributions in the field showing the efficacy of cell therapies including mesenchymal stromal cells when co-transplanted with islets in pre-clinical models. She also has an interest in stem cell derived islet transplantation and has a long- standing collaboration with Novo Nordisk stem cell therapy programme, Copenhagen, Denmark.

She is actively pursuing a number of these approaches at the clinical interface to improve long-term outcomes in people with Type 1 diabetes.
Forbes has expertise in medical statistics and her clinical research examines the clinical islet transplantation outcomes in collaboration with the UK Islet Transplant Consortium and the Edmonton Clinical Islet Transplant Programme. Working with Professor James Shaw and others in the UK Islet Transplant Consortium she found that a second transplant within 3 months of the first versus second transplants that were delayed, had better islet transplant outcomes (S Forbes, et al., Am J Tr 2022).

Patients in the UK are now prioritized on the waiting list to receive their second transplant within 3 months of their first. With Professor Peter Senior she developed and validated the BETA-2 score, a novel composite score of islet transplant function based on a fasting plasma sample and now adopted internationally (see app for calculation www.beta2score.com/). Dr. Sufyan Hussain

Consultant
Dr Sufyan Hussain is a Medical Research Council-funded clinician scientist working as a Diabetes Physician at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital and an Honorary Reader in Diabetes at King’s College London. He has a specialist clinical and research interest in the application of diabetes technologies and novel therapies, including cell therapy, in type 1 diabetes. He graduated from the University of Cambridge and undertook specialist training in London. He completed his PhD at Imperial College London and was a visiting scholar at Joslin Diabetes Centre, Harvard Medical School. He was the lead clinical expert on the landmark NICE Technology appraisal for hybrid-closed loop systems in type 1 diabetes in England. He currently serves as a vice-chair of the UK’s Association of British Clinical Diabetologist’s Diabetes Technology Network and board of directors for the International Diabetes Federation- Europe. He has over 30 years of personal experience living with type 1 diabetes and is passionate about improving diabetes care.
Professor James Shaw

Professor of Regenerative Medicine for Diabetes, Director of the Transplant Regenerative Medicine Laboratories and clinician scientist Lead for the Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cells and Transplantation Research Theme at Newcastle University.

Chair of the Diabetes UK Research Steering Group for type 1 diabetes and the UK Islet Transplant Consortium. Chair of Northern Alliance Advanced Therapies Treatment Centre Clinical Advisory Group and Trials Coordination Forum. Chair Quality in Organ Donation Steering Committee.

Consultant diabetologist in Newcastle with a focus on type 1 diabetes complicated by highly variable glucose levels and hypoglycaemia due to absolute pancreatic insulin-deficiency. Leads a clinical pancreatic islet transplant programme and is supporting development of a highly specialised service for those with diabetes secondary to other pancreatic pathologies.

Completed his PhD through an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship and was a Glaxo-Smith-Kline Senior Fellow. Through MRC funding he established the Quality in Organ Donation whole pancreas tissue bank in Newcastle. Chief Investigator for two CF Trust-funded Strategic Research Centres bringing together international investigators to study mechanisms underlying cystic fibrosis-related diabetes and a Diabetes UK grant exploring anti-fibrotic therapy for chronic pancreatitis-related diabetes. Co-Investigator on an MRC Multimodal Grant exploring amyloid in the diabetic pancreas and an EFSD grant characterising autophagy in the pancreatic beta-cell. Chief Investigator of the HypoCOMPaSS study demonstrating the potential for recovery of hypoglycaemia awareness and prevention of severe hypoglycaemia in long-standing type 1 diabetes using the My Hypo Compass brief psycho-educational intervention which is now being trialled internationally in the NIH CLEAR trial.
