Russell trained in Glasgow and London becoming a consultant in 2007. He works at Glasgow Royal infirmary where has been past lead clinician for Diabetes and clinical director of medicine. He has research and clinical interests in genetics and improving outcomes in type 2 diabetes. His MD focussed on genetics and vascular disease, he teaches at Glasgow University medical school where he is an Honorary Associate Professor of Medicine and has served on the general and executive committee of the ABCD in past roles. He is a qualified rugby coach with the SRU!

The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists is the national organisation of Consultant Physicians in Britain who specialise in Diabetes Mellitus. Most are also Acute General Physicians, and many are also Specialists in Endocrinology and Lipid Metabolism.
