On-demand webinar: Re:Mission study – learning from staff and service user insights from the NHS Low Calorie Diet pilot
NHS England piloted a Low Calorie Diet (LCD) programme, delivered through Total Diet Replacement (TDR) and behaviour change support via 1:1, group or digital delivery, to improve Type 2 Diabetes in adults with excess weight. The impact and implementation of this pilot required evaluation to inform longer-term commissioning decisions.
This session will discuss the findings from the Re:Mission study: a coproduced qualitative and economic evaluation of the NHS LCD pilot, integrated with NHS data to provide an enhanced understanding of the long-term cost effectiveness, implementation, equity and transferability across broad and diverse populations.
The session will examine patient and staff insights, and how the findings have informed the development of the programme and ongoing research.

Professor Louisa Ells
Professor of Obesity & Co-director of the Obesity Institute
Professor Louisa Ells is a Professor of Obesity and co-directs the Obesity Institute at Leeds Beckett University. She is a registered public health nutritionist and Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health.
Louisa specialises in highly applied obesity research and has over 20 years’ experience working across policy, practice, and academia. She has an established track record in coproduced, patient centred, multidisciplinary, cross-sector applied weight management research and evaluation, and has a specialist interest in addressing inequalities.
Louisa has a funding portfolio of more than £11 million, and an extensive publication record. Louisa has been principal investigator of several high-profile projects for the World Health Organization, Public Health England, and the NHS. She has also been an expert advisor to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and sits on delivery boards for the NHS and Office of Health Improvement and Disparities. -
Dr. Christopher Walton
Consultant in Diabetes
Dr Chris Walton is a Consultant Diabetologist In Hull and a previous Chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists. Between 2013 and 2023 he was Clinical Lead for Diabetes in the Yorkshire and Humber NHS Clinical Network promoting the role out of diabetes technology and of dietary programs to acheive remission in Type 2 diabetes throughout the region. He remains an active member of the ABCD nationwide audits group. As deputy editor of the British Journal of Diabetes, he took editorial responsibility for the mini-edition of the British Journal of Diabetes featuring the qualitative findings from the Re:Mission study published immediately prior to the Diabetes UK meeting in April 2024
