Professor Clifford J Bailey
Aston University, Birmingham
Cliff Bailey is Professor of Clinical Science at Aston University in Birmingham, England. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He has been a Royal Society visiting scientist at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a visiting scientist at Hanover Medical School in Germany. He has served on medical and scientific committees of Diabetes UK (formerly the British Diabetic Association), Society for Endocrinology, and European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Professor Bailey has held various editorial positions, including endocrine section editor of British Journal of Pharmacology and editorial board member of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, LancetDE and Primary Care Diabetes. He is presently senior editor of Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research. He has been an expert witness for drug licensing authorities, regulatory agencies and other national and international review bodies. He received the 2013 Lunar Society medal and the 2015 Banting Lecture award. His research is mainly directed towards the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes, especially the development of new agents to improve insulin action and reduce obesity, and the therapeutic application of surrogate beta-cells. He has published extensively with over 400 research papers and reviews, and four books.

 

Professor Melanie Davies CBE, MBChB MD, FRCP, FRCGP, FMedSci
University of Leicester, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Melanie Davies is Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester and an Honorary Consultant Diabetologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Leicester, UK. She is based in the Diabetes Research Centre, University of Leicester and is also the Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre, which has over 160 research staff, at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.  She trained at Sheffield and then completed her training at Cambridge, Ipswich and Leicester. Professor Davies’ research interests include the causes, screening, prevention, self-management and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. She is a National Institute for Health Research Senior Investigator Emeritus and Director of the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre.  Professor Davies is the Principal Investigator on a number of large global studies in the field of diabetes, obesity, physical activity, sedentary behaviour and cardiovascular disease and has served as an expert for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on a number of guideline groups.  Professor Davies was co-chair of EASD/ADA’s recent Consensus Report on T2DM Management. Professor Davies has published over 550 original articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, such as the Lancet, NEJM and the BMJ and has over £60M of peer review grant funding. She has over 510 published abstracts and 10 book chapters, and is Co-editor of the diabetes section in the 2011 Oxford Textbook of Endocrinology and Diabetes. She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the 2016 New Year’s Honour’s List for services to diabetes research and awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2018.

 

Professor Simon Heller
University of Sheffield
Simon Heller is Professor of Clinical Diabetes at the University of Sheffield, Director of Research and Development and Honorary Consultant Physician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, UK. He is currently a member of Diabetes UK Science and Research Advisory Group, a member of the UK NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research Panel and the UK Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, UK Scientific Advisory Committee.  Between 2005 - 2014 he chaired the Clinical Studies Advisory Group of the UK Diabetes Research Network and is currently the National Speciality Lead in Diabetes to the NIHR Clinical Research Network.  He is an NIHR Senior Investigator. His current research interests include the pathophysiological responses to hypoglycaemia and hypoglycaemia unawareness, the potential contribution and mechanisms of hypoglycaemia to cardiovascular mortality, the use of insulin analogues and other technologies to reduce hypoglycaemia.  He chaired the glucose control group of the ADVANCE trial and was the PI on the REPOSE trial measuring the effectiveness of insulin pumps. He also conducts research programmes concerned with developing interventions (including the DAFNE intervention) to encourage more effective diabetes self-management. 

 

 

Professor Helen Murphy
Professor of Medicine (Diabetes and Antenatal Care), University of East Anglia and Professor of Women’s Health, Kings College London
Helen Murphy is a Professor of Medicine (Diabetes and Antenatal Care) at the University of East Anglia and Professor of Women’s Health at Kings College London. She is also an honorary consultant physician at Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust since 2006. 
Helen runs a diabetes pregnancy research programme which aims to improve the glucose control and infant health outcomes of pregnant women with diabetes. Her research interests include improving access to preconception care, developing novel continuous glucose monitoring and artificial pancreas technologies and the role of maternal dietary intake in gestational diabetes. She supervises higher degree students from diabetes & endocrinology, clinical biochemistry and obstetrics & gynaecology. Her research is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Diabetes UK, Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF), and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

 

Dr Parth Narendran
Reader, University of Birmingham and Consultant in Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
Parth Narendran is a Reader at the University of Birmingham, and a Consultant in Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He qualified from Kings College London and undertook his post-graduate clinical training in Manchester, Bristol and London. He conducted his PhD studies on the immune mechanisms underlying the development of type 1 diabetes whilst at Bristol. He was subsequently awarded a JDRF post-doctoral fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. He took up his current post at the University of Birmingham in 2005. Parth’s clinical interests focus on type 1 diabetes and he leads the type 1 services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. These include a structured education programme called Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE), the adolescent transition, insulin pump and islet/pancreas transplant services. Supporting patients to exercise is a core interest of the service. Parth’s research interests also focus on type 1 diabetes. He has a long-standing interest in preserving the function of insulin producing pancreatic beta cells in type 1 diabetes. Over the years he has been fortunate to receive funding from Diabetes UK, JDRF, DRWF, Wellcome Trust, MRC, The Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust as well as the National Institute for Health Research.

 

Dr Dipesh Patel 
Royal Free Hospital, London, Chair ABCD
Dipesh Patel is consultant physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Royal Free NHS Foundation trust in London. He enjoys delivering high quality clinical care in Endocrinology and Diabetes. He is committed to patient safety and supports teams in secondary and community care. Professionally, he is a trustee and current chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD). He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College for research in the area of cellular cholesterol transport in people with dysglycaemia and works as an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL. He is principal investigator in clinical trials in cardiovascular and renal domains. He enjoys being the local teaching lead for undergraduate Endocrinology at the Royal Free Campus.

 

 

Professor John Petrie, PhD FRCP
University of Glasgow UK 
John Petrie (@johnrpetrie) has a long-term interest in diabetes control and complications.  He was Chief Investigator of the international JDRF-funded REMOVAL trial, the longest and largest trial of metformin in type 1 diabetes to date, and the only one to focus on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. John is currently Chair of the Diabetes UK Clinical Study Group (CSG6) on Microvascular and Macrovascular Complications.   He is past President of the European Group for the study of Insulin Resistance (2010-2015), a former Associate Editor of Diabetologia, and a current member of the EASD/ADA Technology Committee.  He led the early development of the successful Scottish Diabetes Research Network (SDRN, 2005-2010) and chaired the 2017 Scottish “SIGN 154” guideline on glucose-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes.   He was a member of the LEADER trial Global Expert Panel. He Chair of Board of Trustees of the Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation (registered charity 1056410) and is active on research funding panels including the UK MRC/NIHR EME programme as well as JDRF, NHMRC Australia, and the Danish Diabetes Academy International Committee for Talent Development. John is currently co-PI (with Dr Paresh Dandona, State University of New York) of a JDRF-funded trial of combined adjunct therapy in type 1 diabetes (“TTT1”).   He does weekly diabetes clinics (types 1 and 2) at Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital, North Glasgow and has responsibility for acute and ongoing care of medical inpatients at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. 

 

Dr Rajeev Raghavan

Dr Chinnadorai Rajeswaran
Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust
Dr C. Rajeswaran (Raj) is a Consultant Physician specialising in obesity, diabetes and endocrinology, currently working in Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. He runs the reputed ‘The London Obesity Clinic’ at Harley Street, London. He has vast experience in management of complex diabetes, endocrine disorders and obesity. He has been instrumental in setting up several tier 3 weight management services in the UK and specialist obesity service overseas. He is also the director for simplyweight Ltd, which a global specialist weight management organisation. He has a number of publications, book chapters and book to his credit. He is also involved in obesity related research and has supervised PhD students. He is a national and international speaker. He founded and chairs the National Diabesity Forum in 2008. National Diabesity Forum provides a network for health care professionals involved in the management of Diabesity. He has featured in Sky news, BBC: Look north, BBC: Big questions and LBC(London Broadcasting Corporation). Raj is involved in both local and international charity work, predominantly to help people with weight problem and those who go hungry. “Biggest Help” is the charity arm of Simplyweight which helps people with hunger. ​

 

 

Dr Bob Ryder
Consultant Diabetologist, City Hospital Birmingham
Bob Ryder trained in South Wales and Sheffield.  He has worked as a Consultant Physician/Diabetologist/Endocrinologist, City Hospital, Birmingham since 1991. Over the years special interests have included diabetic retinopathy screening; diabetic hypoglycaemia unawareness; diabetic autonomic neuropathy; diabetic impotence; clinical use of IT; treating to target; relative risks and benefits of pioglitazone He leads the ABCD nationwide audits of new therapies and devices – current/imminent audits include SGLT2i, liraglutide, exenatide qw, IDegLira, degludec, FreeStyle Libre, semaglutide, testosterone, closed-loop systems.  He is chief investigator of two ABCD Endobarrier studies (https://youtu.be/xRcnMBOdb58, https://youtu.be/y1zm0Scq6YM). Beyond diabetes he is best known as principle author of best-selling "An Aid to the MRCP Short Cases", the 4th-edition of which is the three volume “An Aid to the MRCP PACES”.

 

Dr Emma Wilmot
Consultant Diabetologist,University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and Honorary (consultant) Assistant Professor, University of Nottingham
Dr Wilmot is a Consultant Diabetologist at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton and Honorary (consultant) Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham. Her specialist interests include Type 1 diabetes, insulin pump therapy and diabetes technology, young adults with diabetes and antenatal diabetes care. She is also a principal investigator on clinical trials related to Type 1 diabetes.
Dr Wilmot was the founder of ABCD Diabetes Technology Network UK. In this role she led the delivery of a programme of educational events and online resources for multidisciplinary diabetes teams and people living with diabetes. She is a member of the National Diabetes Audit Insulin Pump Expert Reference Group and has been involved in the development of the 2018 national Type 1 diabetes service level audit. She has also led the development of a suite of national ‘best practice’ guides related to diabetes technology. Dr Wilmot was previously chair of the Young Diabetologists Forum (YDF) and represented trainees on the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) committee.
Dr Wilmot was awarded the University of Leicester medal for excellent PhD performance in 2013 for her PhD “Type 2 diabetes in younger adults”. The output from her PhD has attracted both national and international media interest, in addition to a number of prizes and publications.
