DTN UK Launches Free Self-Assessment Tool to Support Diabetes Technology Competency

Supporting implementation of the National Competency Framework
Following the publication of the National Competency Framework for Training and Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in Diabetes Technologies, Including Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL), Insulin Pump Systems and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Devices (Richardson et al., 2026), the Diabetes Technology Network UK is pleased to launch a practical implementation tool to support diabetes services across the UK.

The Self-Assessment of Competency for Healthcare Professionals Delivering an Insulin Pump (CSII) and Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) Service has been developed to help healthcare professionals assess their knowledge, skills and experience in diabetes technologies and identify areas for further development.

Available free of charge, the tool is designed to:

  • Support implementation of the national competency framework in routine clinical practice
  • Standardise training and competency assessment across diabetes technology services
  • Enable healthcare professionals to benchmark their current level of practice
  • Facilitate meaningful discussions with service leads and mentors regarding training needs and career development
  • Support workforce planning, competency progression and service quality assurance
  • Promote safe, effective and equitable delivery of diabetes technology services

The assessment recognises that healthcare professionals contribute to diabetes technology services in different ways and at different levels of expertise. It supports competency development across the multidisciplinary team while ensuring individuals continue to work within their scope of practice.

DTN UK will also provide signposting to educational resources, training opportunities and learning materials aligned to the competency tiers, helping teams and individuals develop and maintain their skills in insulin pump, HCL and CGM therapies.

We encourage all diabetes services delivering technology-enabled care to adopt the self-assessment tool as part of their local workforce development and governance processes.

Together, the National Competency Framework and the DTN UK Self-Assessment Tool provide a structured approach to developing a confident, competent and sustainable diabetes technology workforce.
