Mrs Deepali Varma is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Retina specialist at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, the Director of Research at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and the NIHR National Specialty group lead for Ophthalmology.
Her other roles include General Medical Council national expert witness in Ophthalmology, RCOphth examiner and Honorary Treasurer for the North of England Ophthalmological society.
She has received accolades including the ‘Bright Ideas in Health Award 2014 by NHS Innovations North and the ‘Leading commercial Principal Investigator award by the Chief Medical Officer (Prof Dame Sally Davies) in 2015. She was on the #NorthInnovationWomen 2019 honour list by the Northern Health Science Alliance.
