Consultant Development Programme

The ABCD Consultant Development Programme (CDP) is an annual five-day residential course offered to specialist registrars in their last year of training and to newly-appointed consultants (within three years of appointment). Accredited through the Academic Institute of Medicine at the University of Wolverhampton as a stand-alone short course, delegates can either, obtain a certificate of attendance, or with further self-study earn 20 credits at NQF Level 7 which can be used towards a Master’s qualification.

First run in 2015, the CDP is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of the leadership responsibilities that are part of a consultant’s day-to-day role and enable them to benchmark their own level of competence as a future leader. Using the key competencies identified by the NHS Leadership Academy in the National Clinical Leadership Competency Framework, the CDP offers delegates the opportunity to develop and hone many of the essential leadership and management skills required by a consultant in today’s NHS.

The CDP combines theory, practical application and action learning. In addition to a challenging and inspiring faculty, we bring in external speakers from the NHS. These might include current clinical and medical directors, Trust Chairs or NHS colleagues from a different field. Common to all our speakers is their expertise and honesty: they will ask and answer difficult questions!
