Dr Beatrice Pieri

"I am very grateful to the Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation and the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists for supporting this joint fellowship, which will form the basis of my PhD at the Leicester Diabetes Centre.

My project aims to better understand why some people living with type 1 diabetes experience high levels of fear of hypoglycaemia, and how this affects daily life."

"The research will explore the causes of this fear, including why it can persist despite modern diabetes technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps. Using these findings, I aim to develop a psycho-educational intervention to reduce fear of hypoglycaemia. Ultimately, I hope this work will help improve quality of life, clinical outcomes and self-management for people living with type 1 diabetes with elevated fear of hypoglycaemia."

* The Diabetes Care Trust (DCT) was established in 2010 with a mission to empower diabetes specialists in their vital work supporting individuals living with diabetes (charity number 1139057). The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists is the national organisation of Consultant Physicians in Britain who specialise in Diabetes Mellitus. Most are also Acute General Physicians, and many are also Specialists in Endocrinology and Lipid Metabolism.

** The Novo Nordisk UK Research Foundation (charity number 1056410) (NNUKRF) is a corporate foundation dedicated to funding research, developing young researchers, and supporting education among the diabetes health professional community in the UK. Novo Nordisk Ltd is the sole donor to NNUKRF, however, NNUKRF decides and allocates funding independently to fulfil its own independent charitable objectives.
