Professor Ramzi Ajjan
Leeds
RA Ajjan (FRCP, MMed.Sci, PhD) is a Professor of Metabolic Medicine and an Honorary Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Leeds University and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. He obtained his PhD from the University of Sheffield and completed his clinical training in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Prof. Ajjan was successful at obtaining a Clinician Scientist Award from the NIHR in 2005 and developed a spectrum of basic, translational and clinical research studies. His work collectively aims to reduce cardiovascular complications in diabetes by improving glycaemia and ameliorating the thrombotic environment.His clinical studies have focussed on optimising glycaemic control by reducing high glucose levels, while avoiding hypoglycaemia and keeping glucose variability to a minimum. His translational work aims to uncover novel therapeutic targets to reduce the hypofibrinolytic environment in diabetes, a key abnormality in this condition.He has over 150 publications including original articles, reviews and book chapters. His clinical practice concentrates on young adults with diabetes as well as older individuals at high risk of vascular disease. He is local R&D lead for Diabetes/Endocrinology, regional clinical research network co-lead for diabetes, endocrine and metabolic conditions, and deputy Chair of Clinical Study Group 2 at Diabetes UK. He is an Associate Editor of Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research, and member of the editorial board of International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

 

Professor Stephen Bain
Swansea
Steve Bain is the Clinical Director of the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru, and Medical Director for Research & Development for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABM) University Health Board. 
Professor Bain completed his undergraduate training at St John's College, Cambridge, and then was clinically trained at King's College Hospital, London. On qualifying in 1983, he went on to hold junior appointments in London, the East Midlands, and the West Midlands, UK. His research centred on the genetics of type 1 diabetes, and he was granted a Medical Research Council Lectureship. In 1993, he became a Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant Physician at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, with promotion to Reader in Diabetic Medicine in 1998. Professor Bain became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1996. Professor Bain was appointed to a newly created Chair in Medicine (Diabetes) in the University of Wales Swansea in 2005. His clinical interests include the genetics of diabetic nephropathy, new therapies for diabetes and the provision of diabetes services within the community. He has been Chief Investigator for several multi-centre trials investigating novel therapies for diabetes. Professor Bain is the Diabetes Lead Clinician for the ABM University Health Board and a member of the Wales Diabetes & Endocrine Society (WEDS) executive committee. He chairs the Joint Clinical Research Facility in Swansea and was Clinical Director of the Academic Health Science Collaboration (AHSC) in Wales until September 2015. He chaired the Diabetes & Endocrinology Specialist Training Committee (STC) for Wales 2010-2016 and is currently the chair of the National Specialist Advisory Group (NSAG) for Diabetes in Wales.
 

Professor Vijay Jayagopal
York
Vijay has been a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology since 2005 and has received an MD (Hons) for his work on insulin resistance variability.  He was Lead Clinician for the service from 2009 to 2017. In 2017 he was appointed Undergraduate Clinical Dean for his Trust.  
In the last few years he has been involved in the transformation of Diabetes services in the York area with the creation of a Community Diabetes Service and a Diabetes Specialist Outreach service.
Vijay is the regional RCP Diabetes advisor and since 2017 an elected committee member for the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists. 

 

Dr Janaka Karalliedde
London
Dr Karalliedde is a Clinical Reader in the School of Cardiovascular Medicine and Sciences at King's College London and Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital London.
He graduated with a distinction in medicine from the University of London and was awarded UK Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship and PhD by the University of London for research on the pathophysiology and treatment of cardiovascular disease and kidney disease in diabetes.  He has published widely in the subject of diabetic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease and has been awarded research grants from the UK Medical Research Council, Diabetes UK, European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, National Institute for Health Research, and the International Diabetes Federation. Dr Karalliedde is an active clinician, with expertise in managing patients with renal and cardio-vascular complications related to diabetes. He runs specialist clinics for patients with diabetic kidney and vascular complications at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital and has led the development of cardio-renal community diabetes clinics in South London that are focussed on early identification and interventions in people with diabetes at high risk of cardiovascular and kidney disease.

Dr Dinesh Nagi
Wakefield
Dinesh Nagi is a Consultant Physician with interests in diabetes & endocrinology at the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, based at Edna Coates Diabetes and Endocrine Unit Pinderfields Hospital. He was clinical lead in Diabetes & Endocrinology at the MYT between 2002 and 2011. He served as a member of The RCP Council representing Diabetes UK, Association of British Clinical Diabetologist (ABDC) and Society of Endocrinology.  His other major interests are around service developments in Diabetes having lead the development and implementation of the Innovative Redesign of Diabetes service supporting primary Care. He is outgoing clinical Lead and Director of Wakefield and North Kirklees Eye screening programme for last 10 years. He has long term interest in application of exercise and sports in Type1 and Type 2 Diabetes.  He served as Chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) from May 2017 to May 2020.

 

Dr Jane Patmore
Hull 
Dr Patmore is a Diabetes Consultant at Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust and has been in post there since 2003. Her sub-specialty interests are diabetic foot disease, type 1 diabetes care including young adult diabetes and insulin pump therapy and she also is very interested in supporting primary care diabetes services.

 

Dr Chris Walton
Hull
Chris  is a graduate of Newcastle upon Tyne medical school. He currently works as a consultant diabetologist based within the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust where he provides community diabetes services. He is Clinical Lead for the Yorkshire and Humber Diabetes Clinical Network and Chairs the Hull and East Yorkshire Diabetes Network Board. He served as  Chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists from May 2011 to May 2014 during which time he helped secure the acquisition of the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease (now the British Journal of Diabetes) as the official journal of the Association and launched with Patrick Sharp, then Secretary of ABCD the ‘Lost Tribe campaign highlighting the need to focus on the needs of people with Type 1 diabetes. One of his roles with ABCD was to co-chair with Prof Alan Sinclair, the Diabetes in Care Homes National Audit.   His main clinical interests are diabetes care in the community and achieving integrated diabetes services.  He was a member of the writing group for the NHS 2013 document entitled ‘Best practice for commissioning diabetes services-an integrated care Framework’.
