DEKODE Hypoglycaemia
Background
Hypoglycaemia is a common but potentially life-threatening complication in hospitalised patients with diabetes. Despite its clinical significance, there is a paucity of data on epidemiology, management and outcomes. The DEKODE-Hypoglycaemia initiative builds on the success of the DEKODE-DKA surveillance model, collecting multicentre, real-time data on hypoglycaemia. It aims to assess adherence to national Joint British Diabetes Society (JBDS) guidelines and drive quality improvement across NHS trusts.
Data Management
DEKODE-Hypoglycaemia uses a secure platform to collect data on hypoglycaemia episodes, including treatment and outcomes. Data collection standardised across participating hospitals for direct comparability. Patient confidentiality is safeguarded through anonymisation and strict adherence to the Caldicott Principles.
Expected Outcomes
- Monitor real-time trends in hypoglycaemia incidence, management and outcomes
- Identify care gaps relative to JBDS hypoglycaemia guidelines
- Provide actionable feedback to hospitals on clinical standards and performance
- Reduce hypoglycaemia-related complications through targeted interventions
- Enhance overall clinical knowledge and quality of national data on hypoglycaemia
How Can You Participate?
Healthcare professionals and institutions can:
- Register your interest in collaborating via email
- Obtain local governance or ethics approval from your institution
- Submit anonymised data on Hypoglycaemia cases through the DEKODE-Hypoglycaemia data collection platform
- Engage in feedback sessions to review hospital-specific outcomes
- Promote awareness of Hypoglycaemia and its management amongst healthcare professionals
Audit Objectives
Aim
To evaluate and improve the quality and consistency of care for patients with hypoglycaemia, reducing mortality and improving clinical outcomes.
Objectives
- Monitor real-time trends in hypoglycaemia nationally to detect emerging risks and management gaps
- Assess adherence to JBDS guidelines, identifying opportunities for clinical improvement
- Identify barriers and facilitators to guideline implementation, promoting consistent and effective care
- Benchmark performance across participating centres to support targeted, evidence-based quality improvement
