Ian Gallen is consultant physician and endocrinologist at Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading, having trained University of London (Westminster Medical School), with MD University of Nottingham and was Instructor in Medicine (Endocrinology) at Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Completing training at Exeter and Bristol.
Dr Gallen provides specialist care for people with diabetes in the community and secondary care. Over the last 20 years, Ian has followed a specific interest in the management of diabetes in people who want to exercise or compete in sport. Ian was special medical advisor to the London 2012 Olympics. This work has been recognized by the awards of the Royal Society of Medicine Gold medal for outstanding achievement,and in 2019 a CBE for contribution to public health.
His clinical research in the field diabetes and sports, with studies concerning strategies to reduce dysglycaemia and improve performance with exercise in diabetes.
He has published reviews, book and book chapters about Type 1 diabetes and exercise, and the upcoming Oxford Handbook of Sports Medicine.
Ian continues to teach on sports and diabetes in UK and abroad.
