DEKODE Hyperglycaemic Hyperosmolar State (HHS)
Background
Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State (HHS) is a severe, life-threatening complication of diabetes. Despite its severity, national data on its epidemiology, presentation and outcomes remains limited. The DEKODE-HHS initiative builds on the success of the DEKODE-DKA surveillance model, collecting multicentre, real-time data on HHS. It aims to improve assess adherence to national Joint British Diabetes Society (JBDS) guidelines, and support quality improvement.
Data Management
DEKODE-HHS uses a secure platform to collect data on HHS presentation, treatment and outcomes and standardises data collection across participating hospitals for direct comparability. Patient confidentiality is protected through anonymisation and adherence to the Caldicott Principles.
Expected Outcomes
- Monitor real-time trends in HHS presentation and clinical outcomes
- Identify gaps in care in accordance with national HHS guidelines by the Joint British Diabetes Society
- Feedback clinical data to hospitals on management standards, supporting local quality improvement
- Reduce HHS-related complications and mortality through targeted interventions
- Enhance overall clinical knowledge and quality of national data on HHS
How can you participate?
Healthcare professionals and institutions can:
- Register your interest in collaborating via email
- Obtain local governance or ethics approval from your institution
- Submit anonymised data on HHS cases through the DEKODE-HHS data collection platform
- Engage in feedback sessions to review hospital-specific outcomes
- Promote awareness of HHS and its management amongst healthcare professionals
Audit Objectives
Aim
To evaluate and improve the quality and consistency of care for patients with HHS, reducing mortality and improving clinical outcomes
Objectives
- Monitor real-time trends in HHS nationally to detect adverse management trends early
- Assess adherence to national guidelines, identifying opportunities for improvement
- Identify barriers and facilitators to guideline implementation, promoting consistent and effective care
- Compare performance standards across participating centres to support targeted, evidence-based quality improvement
