It is with profound sadness that many will have heard, the National Diabetes Audit lead, Dr Bob Young, died on 23rd July 2024. Bob was a consultant in diabetes at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. He had led the National Diabetes Audit since its inception in around 2003, working with National Clinical Directors for Diabetes, Dr Sue Roberts, and Dr Rowan Hillson. That the NDA became substantive in 2008 and the vast data repository he helped to create and lead has produced internationally recognised population level data on all aspects of diabetes care is a testament to his commitment, drive and tenacity.
As Bob said, it is only by measuring that areas in need of change can be identified. The NDA data continues to drive innovation, reduce variation, and raise the standard of care for people with diabetes, highlighting areas of good practice that can be shared, but also where things need to be improved.
I am sure that ABCD and DTN members and others who will miss Bob’s kind and thoughtful input will want to extend their very deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and many friends.
