Stephanie Amiel is an experimental medicine researcher, currently Emeritus Professor of Diabetes Research at King's College London and an honorary consultant physician at King's College Hospital. Her research has focussed on mechanisms of hypoglycaemia awareness in insulin therapy, as well as the central control and the impact of ethnicity on insulin sensitivity. She was instrumental in developing the UK's DAFNE programme and led services for type 1 diabetes at King's, including starting the King's human islet transplant programme. She recently completed a trial of a novel adjunctive therapy for hypoglycaemia avoidance for people experiencing problematic hypoglycaemia despite otherwise optimised self-management and is now working with DAFNEplus and HypoRESOLVE. She chaired the 2015 NICE guideline development group for the current type 1 guideline, serves as a mentor on the EFSD mentorship programme and chairs the Science and Research Advisory Group for Diabetes UK.
